Portland/Salem Metro Birth and Postpartum Doula
Marieke’s Approach to Doula Work
Marieke believes that the birthing experience is a sacred, organic, and empowering moment that deserves nurturing, protection, and support. Drawing from her intimate knowledge of body mechanics through the Alexander Technique and her deep understanding of breathing gained from teaching singers, she enhances her doula work. This helps each birthing person appreciate the miracle of their body’s capabilities. Marieke prefers to meet with clients several times before the birth to share techniques and build trust. She recognizes that the birthing person's support team—whether a partner, parent, or friend—also requires nurturing, as they are vital to the birth and the evolving family dynamic. Marieke creates a supportive environment for everyone involved and collaborates with other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care.
As a DONA trained THW doula, Marieke is dedicated to providing high-quality, evidence-based education to her clients. She equips them with the resources and information necessary to make informed decisions throughout their birthing journey. Additionally, Marieke remains available to clients during the initial months of the postpartum period, offering support in person or via text and phone.
Marieke’s Background
With years of experience as a music educator and Alexander Technique instructor, Marieke brings a unique sensitivity and awareness to her doula practice. She is trained by DONA and inspired by the writings of Ina May Gaskin and Penny Simkin. Marieke has supported families through spontaneous births and assisted births, whether at home, in birthing centers, or in hospitals.
Marieke is a proud mother of two daughters and grandmother of three, along with a cat named Charlie. Having experienced both of her own births at home—one using hypnosis—she enjoys swimming, paddleboarding, dancing, gardening, and reading literary fiction during her leisure time. She is also a member of an a cappella singing group and teaches voice and Alexander Technique lessons.
